dear mae,

i feel like it’s been ages, and yet the time has just flown by.  my darling niles is two and a half months old already, and man, am i in love with this boy or what? since i haven’t posted anything since he’s been born, i figured i’d give you a peek of what his life has been like so far, and i suppose what mine has been like since he got here.

niles, at his moment of birth (please excuse the side-boob).
is there anything better in the world than baby toes?
daddy’s first father’s day
this poor kid doesn’t stand a chance…

that smile, those eyes! how can you not be in love with this little fella? i have zillions more pictures, but i’m going to save some for later!  just so you know, this kid is amazing. aside from being extremely good looking, he also has slept though the night since week one, he is super independent (for a baby), rarely cries, and is already a gourmet chef! well, not quite, but he is super awesome.

ps, if you want to see a zillion more pictures of the best little fella around, you can follow me on instagram.

dear mae,

last week i was out walking tony, and getting the mail when he pulled me a direction we don’t normally walk. i was busy flipping though a catalog or something while walking when someone called from behind me. it was a gentleman asking if i had had any maternity photos taken and if i would like to.  i said i hadn’t, just ones my husband had taken but would be interested, even though i’m about to pop.  we decided to do it as soon as possible, it was a real spur of the moment thing!

we got together this weekend in the “20%” chance of downpours at the local park and had an absolutely lovely time! i’ve been stalking my email ever since awaiting the arrival of the photos, and now they are here!

tom and i haven’t had our picture taken together since our wedding, and it was a lot of fun! we kind of just went for a casual walk in the park with our dog and dan mostly followed along with his camera stopping us every once in a while near a cool tree or barn.  he did a wonderful job of capturing our relationship as well as our expanding family.  i’ll probably end up calling him when baby gets here for some more shots!

you can see the rest of the pictures on his facebook, and if you live in the portland metro area i would highly recommend checking out his website if you are in need of any kind of photography!

oh, i’m also going to take this time to mention, why don’t you live here? can’t you see how lovely it is?

dear mae,

so far for me, the best part about being pregnant is collecting all of the tiny little sweet smelling baby items i’ll need when my little guy finally gets here.  i’ve been painting old furniture, sewing curtains, crafting like a mad woman…. and it’s awesome.  finally his little corner of the world is coming together ready for late night feedings, story book reading, diaper changes, and i’m certain it’s never going to look this nice again, so i’d better get some pictures up before he gets here and destroys his beautiful nursery!

art is from land of nod and ikea, crib is from target and the deer pillow was my very first baby craft

both lamps are goodwill finds, the red one got a fresh coat of paint, but the blue one already fit in just right!baby doesn’t have a whole lot of toys  of his own just yet, so tom’s robot collection is saving a shelf for now.this globe is another brilliant goodwill find, only $6!
oh, my baby stands no chance but to be a nerd…. i spy a dalek and a tardis, a gameboy, superman, number twenty four, maths…. and that’s only on one side of his room!

i’ve been spending a lot of time in this little room, and it’s becoming quite cozy, i hope my little guy likes it in there as much as i do!

p.s. my personal favorite part is the marquee letter lights! i made them myself for less that $20 with this tutorial!

dear mae,

i hope you can excuse my recent absence, i’ve been really, really busy!! tom and i are super excited to announce little baby arthur on his or her way! there are so many things i want to tell you about the little beanie! i’m due may 25th, and in january we will find out if it’s going to be a margot, quinn, chloe, or a niles, simon or henry.  i’m nearly 11 weeks along, and even though i promised myself i would wait till week 12 to tell the entire world, i just can’t keep my big fat mouth shut! every one that i see on a daily basis already knows (how else could i explain not drinking, no smoking, no caffeine and the ridiculous amount of food intake?) so i figured it fair to share the news with extended family and long distance friends in this manner.

i have made a promise to myself (and my husband) to try my darndest to look my best while in waiting.  throwing on a coat of mascara and a splash of lipstick makes me feel a tad prettier now that none of my pants fit, and i will always choose a knit skirt over a pair of sweats, just as comfy, but worlds more attractive.

i want to thank every one that has put up with my crabbiness lately, and those who will continue to put up with it in the upcoming months.  thanks to those who take out the trash for me, who climb ladders for me, and who will soon be bending to pick up the things i drop and can no longer reach.  everyone around me has made me feel so loved and if my hormones get the best of me, please forgive me.

❤ betty

oh, and as a promise to our readers, i will not be changing the format of this blog into one about my pregnancy or my baby. i’m sure these things will come up from time to time, and will may reduce the frequency in which i post, but i promise to you that this will still be a place to find your vintagy musings, a show off for my collections and hobbies and other things you have come to expect from betty mae vintage!

dearest mamers,

i know i was wearing this dress in my last post, but it is so damn cute i can barley peel it off my body.  it fits like a dream and has so many happy colors!! i can’t resist it hanging there in my closet, so it hasn’t spent much time in there.  i wasn’t feeling as cocky as the other day when i sported it with my pink turban headscarf and pearls, so this time i kind of toned it down with some grey and navy accessories.

we were at the portland museum of art to see ‘the allure of the automobile’ witch i have plenty of pictures of, but that’s another post.  there were a couple of paintings that really caught my eye, and i thought of sharing them with you first!

i heard a nearby couple giggling as i explained to tom about how this painting reminds me of my coffee from starbucks.  the green logo, the pink lipstick and the yellowish coffee dribble.

i almost expect to see my awkward reflection in the side of this car when i gawk at its photo-realism.

anywho, i hope it’s alright that i didn’t reference any of the artists’ names or the actual names of these paintings, because i didn’t read any of the little placards next to the pieces.

the beach

dear mae,

with tom’s family in town this week, we had to think of the most fun, biggest most wonderful attraction in our fair state of oregon.  we considered mt. hood, or crater lake, or spending a whole day goofing off in portland, but the one thing we all wanted to do this week was to see the pacific ocean.  i’ve done a lot of traveling, but i had never seen the west coast, officially.   it was, for the most part, cool and dreary, but it only sprinkled for a little while, and the kids still got to play in the ocean.

at low tide we could walk all of the way up to haystack rock.
low tide exposed the whole reef at the base of the big rock and we found thousands of starfish, hermit crabs and tiny jellyfish.
the town we visited was so quaint and beautiful, overgrown gardens in every front yard!
the weather was clear for a little while in the afternoon, and i have an interesting tan line from my necklace
we watched the sunset over the ocean and built a fire in the sand, frankie avalon would be proud!

i wish we would have planned ahead better so we could have spent a few days at the coast, because one day was certainly not enough to see everything and really get some relaxing and sunshine in. heck, i liked it so much that i was pricing out apartments this morning! just a pipe dream for now, but i’ve always loved the beach, so who knows? i do have a habit of moving to my favorite vacation spots.

hey mae!

it’s been a mere 6 months since we packed up everything and moved clear across the country, and i couldn’t be more satisfied with what i’ve done to this meager apartment in such a short period of time.  this is more like a progress report because nothing stays where it is for long in this place, and there are a few things this place needs in order to be a wee bit cozier.

i’m going to start the tour by saying that we spent a grand total of fifty dollars on all of our furniture in the living room, and not too much more than that on our accessories. talk about decoration on a small budget!

this area is still lacking some proper coat hooks, now everything’s just hanging on screws.
i’ve been meaning to pick up some taper candles to stick in these bottles, but it keeps slipping my mind.
i worked out some curtains for my front window, but they are just tacked to the wall. keeping my eye out for a reasonably priced curtain rod.  oh, and check out my sweet view of the garages across the street. jealous yet?
this sofa used to be a $30 thrift store disaster, but with the help of my entire fabric scrap collection and one million finger pricks, it is a scandinavian dreamsicle. also,  i’ve had a sudden obsession with scouring the resale shops art isle. you can’t imagine the weird stuff that goes on in there.
florence really needs a better place to stand. she keeps falling over, or jumping out and scaring people.  oh, and yes that’s a bb-gun on the wall there.

i can’t tell if this place is going to turn out to be more wack-a-doodle than our last apartment, but i do miss my mustache mirror and my cardboard fireplace.  it does feel much more grown up in here, and a lot less cluttered, and i’m not sure if that’s a good thing or not.

❤ always,

betty
