dear mae,

i’m getting down to the wire, and to be honest, it’s boring. this may or may not be the last time in my entire life that i can actually claim boredom.  i put together a nice “mom look” today to go run some errands and clean house (i hate the term nesting).  i put my hair up in a turban threw on some eyeliner and lipstick (as i was running out the door to catch the bus), i’m really stretching my maternity wardrobe now (literally, these pants are barley holding at the seams, i didn’t realize that this big belly came with a matching butt and thighs).

vintage scarf courtesy of a new dress a day giveaway!

holy crap stunned look on my face.  that is a huge belly.

and nothing better than a wack-a-doodle self portrait to make your own mom look more normal.

anyway, i’m down to the final stretch, only 23 days until my due date, so basically any day now! i can hardly believe it! i’ve made a few minor adjustments in the nursery i plan on sharing with you before the week is through assuming i don’t get caught up in the rest of my to do list, or something even more exciting!

❤ betty

p.s. have you seen my nursery on apartment therapy? i’m pretty proud!

dear maemers,

it just occurred to me that the last pictures i posted of myself were the first ones i took of my teeny tiny bump, and gosh do i look different now!  i apologize, but you have no idea how hard it is to get dressed when your size changes every other week. i mostly (even though i promised it wouldn’t) just wear pj’s around the house to avoid buying a whole new wardrobe for just a couple of seasons.  however, i did find this lovely frock hanging out in the back of my closet, and by glory it fits! and looks nice to boot! it used to belong to my mom and she handed it over to me a couple of years ago. the last time she had worn it she was pregnant with my baby (22 year old) brother.

huh, from the backside, i don’t even necessarily look pregnant!

oops, i spoke too soon!
and a little fisheye action on the bump.

the weather is finally warming up and more importantly drying out here, and has inspired me to at least do my hair from time to time which makes all of the difference even with my work attire or maternity jeans and tee shirts.  only one month left until i have my body back to myself and i get to start shedding my maternity butt, and squeezing back into some of my old clothes! oh yeah, and of course meeting my amazing little fella!

dear mae,

i hope you can excuse my recent absence, i’ve been really, really busy!! tom and i are super excited to announce little baby arthur on his or her way! there are so many things i want to tell you about the little beanie! i’m due may 25th, and in january we will find out if it’s going to be a margot, quinn, chloe, or a niles, simon or henry.  i’m nearly 11 weeks along, and even though i promised myself i would wait till week 12 to tell the entire world, i just can’t keep my big fat mouth shut! every one that i see on a daily basis already knows (how else could i explain not drinking, no smoking, no caffeine and the ridiculous amount of food intake?) so i figured it fair to share the news with extended family and long distance friends in this manner.

i have made a promise to myself (and my husband) to try my darndest to look my best while in waiting.  throwing on a coat of mascara and a splash of lipstick makes me feel a tad prettier now that none of my pants fit, and i will always choose a knit skirt over a pair of sweats, just as comfy, but worlds more attractive.

i want to thank every one that has put up with my crabbiness lately, and those who will continue to put up with it in the upcoming months.  thanks to those who take out the trash for me, who climb ladders for me, and who will soon be bending to pick up the things i drop and can no longer reach.  everyone around me has made me feel so loved and if my hormones get the best of me, please forgive me.

❤ betty

oh, and as a promise to our readers, i will not be changing the format of this blog into one about my pregnancy or my baby. i’m sure these things will come up from time to time, and will may reduce the frequency in which i post, but i promise to you that this will still be a place to find your vintagy musings, a show off for my collections and hobbies and other things you have come to expect from betty mae vintage!

dear mae,

i love fall! socks, loafers, cardigans, i could go on…. it’s getting chilly out here already, and at the first sign of cool weather i break out some knee socks.  so, maybe it’s not really chilly, but it’s definitly not hot out.  so maybe i’ll sport a summer dress, with some fall footwear.  i think it’s because i got a pumpkin spice latte the other day, (and every day since!) but i’m in the mood for some fall fashions!!

i found this dress on a table with a sign that said “pay what you’d like”  in front of bohemian vintage. at that time it was a full length mu-mu, with long sleeves.  just a few snips and a bit of a nip, it’s a lot more fashionable!

in other news, i can’t seem to make my hair into a proper bouffant without it parting down the middle about an hour after teasing it like crazy.  i think i might need to go get some more hairspray.

❤ always,

betty

Hey Betty!

I’ve never been one to hide my big, fat girl crush on Chanel. The Mademoiselle has been a subject of countless hours of conversation (to perhaps less interested, long-suffering friends and loved ones) and dog eared tomes of her life and work have a special corner of the bowing shelves of my bookcase. It seems fitting to wax poetic, as I just bought my first bottle of No. 5. Chanel herself picked every aspect of the scent, rejecting many prototypes to pick what is still today’s parfum: a deep, complex aroma, bold as it is timeless.

My Chanel Shrine: all of which were gifts save for the two large bottles of perfume.

Chanel eau, of course, seems like an insane luxury of Parisienne women, with their crisp suits perfectly pressed as they have their Pinot Noir in a classy café. True, it may be unnecessary in the grand scheme of things. But there are few things on earth that can make me feel so special, so beautiful, sensual, and distinctly woman. I got my first bottle as a gift from Jon’s mom; an incredibly beautiful, thoughtful gift from an indescribibly classy woman who knew how much I loved the Chanel story. She braved the ice covered streets of Paris to visit the Chanel flagship shop and brought me back a crystal tube of the lightest pink lipgloss and this little vial of warm, spicy glory.

The scent will always conjure up these memories. Every time I catch a whiff of the amber-colored zest, or see that medicinal, crystal vial, I think of the remarkable longevity of the scent on my clothes, the seat of my car, the couch where I knit, and the gift lovingly brought from the City of Light.

lots of amour,

mae

dear mae,

my hair and i have become rather close lately.  i’ve become a near pro at the the art of the beehive, and sport one whenever i wake up early enough.  i love it when gals on the street stop me to tell me “that is the best hair i’ve ever seen” (true story! eek!) but then i get a little sad when they say “i could never do that.” i assure you you can! it just takes at least medium length hair, loads of teasing and hairspray and a hand full of bobby pins.  i like to zazz mine up with a scarf or a ribbon, mostly because the back of my hair ends up falling out by the end of the day.  i owe my big hair to a one miss kerry from yours truly, x.

please excuse the fearful look in my eye, i hate taking self portraits, they always look weird.

this is my favorite workday hairdo, my boss says it makes me look fast, like my head is on fire or something.

dear mae,

i’ve been told never to wear more that 3 colors at a time. i’ve heard, you always are to remove one accessory before you leave the house, i’ve heard that your shoes make your outfit, and that pearls are not for cleaning house in.  but screw it. i don’t need your silly rules, and i’m breaking all of them.

mod 1960’s dress from pop-up shoppe, pearls belonged to my mother-in-law, thrifted scarf

running errands always feels better in a new dress.

betty
