dear mae,

i don’t often get a chance to shower these days, i’m on a disgusting every third day rotation.  this however does leave me about 5 minutes to pull my hair up into a fantastical beehive occasionally.  i also might mention that i haven’t colored my hair in over two months. yikes! looks like i might be a mousy brunette before i get to get ginge again.  let me know if you care to make a donation to the get ginge foundation, otherwise i might just let it all grow out, for now at least…

i also might mention that my unofficial photoshop has “expired” and i don’t care to purchase it so i have been using pixlr for my photo editing and filters.

dear mae,

i’m getting down to the wire, and to be honest, it’s boring. this may or may not be the last time in my entire life that i can actually claim boredom.  i put together a nice “mom look” today to go run some errands and clean house (i hate the term nesting).  i put my hair up in a turban threw on some eyeliner and lipstick (as i was running out the door to catch the bus), i’m really stretching my maternity wardrobe now (literally, these pants are barley holding at the seams, i didn’t realize that this big belly came with a matching butt and thighs).

vintage scarf courtesy of a new dress a day giveaway!

holy crap stunned look on my face.  that is a huge belly.

and nothing better than a wack-a-doodle self portrait to make your own mom look more normal.

anyway, i’m down to the final stretch, only 23 days until my due date, so basically any day now! i can hardly believe it! i’ve made a few minor adjustments in the nursery i plan on sharing with you before the week is through assuming i don’t get caught up in the rest of my to do list, or something even more exciting!

❤ betty

p.s. have you seen my nursery on apartment therapy? i’m pretty proud!

dear mae,

another work-a-day hairdo!

1. tie a scarf with a big bow

2. spray your roots

3. tease! tease way more than you think you need to!

4. pull up the top half, twist the ends, and pin them high and close to your scalp

5. lightly comb the top to reduce flyaways and strays

6. curl your fringe and any little straggle hairs

7. spray it! i like to spray a lot, because i ride my bike to work, and want it to look nice when i get there.

my hair is a lot taller than it looks in this picture, but i have a problem taking pictures of myself that don’t give me crazy eyes.  i’m going for kind of a 1950’s bouffant look that will survive my commute and the high humidity of my workplace.

dear mae,

my hair and i have become rather close lately.  i’ve become a near pro at the the art of the beehive, and sport one whenever i wake up early enough.  i love it when gals on the street stop me to tell me “that is the best hair i’ve ever seen” (true story! eek!) but then i get a little sad when they say “i could never do that.” i assure you you can! it just takes at least medium length hair, loads of teasing and hairspray and a hand full of bobby pins.  i like to zazz mine up with a scarf or a ribbon, mostly because the back of my hair ends up falling out by the end of the day.  i owe my big hair to a one miss kerry from yours truly, x.

please excuse the fearful look in my eye, i hate taking self portraits, they always look weird.

this is my favorite workday hairdo, my boss says it makes me look fast, like my head is on fire or something.

dear mae,

it’s a good thing i’ve redone my bathroom, because i’ve been spending a lot of time in there.  not like that. i’ve been trying for about a week to perfect the victory roll.  my hair is just getting long enough now that it’s super fun to play with all kinds of vintage hairstyles, and latley i’m enamored with the victory roll.  it took me about forty minutes this morning, and about a dozen youtube tutorials, but i finally got it!

it’s a little sloppy, but i just need some more practice.

ladies in the 1940’s sported this look, along with many more to perk up their rationed wardrobes.  women were joining the workforce in droves and pulled themselves into boring work-a-day uniforms, and needed an outlet for some style and creativity.  i can definitely relate to wanting to spunk up boring work clothes.

dearest maemers,

when i started this job, i was slightly down-trodden by the extremely strict dress code: black and white. maybe khaki.  no tattoos, no piercings, no self expression at all. or so i thought.  i’ve lately become obsessed with trying to show off some personal style in the workplace, mostly by way of hair and makeup.  you can tell me what to wear, but you can’t dictate how i wear it! except for the tucked in shirt thing, which i will never understand.  i’ve made myself a high-waisted black pencil skirt and pair it with a white collared shirt most days.

i picked myself up a curling iron and some red lipstick and i feel like myself again.  now instead of spending twenty minutes trying to decide what to wear in the morning i spend that time hopelessly trying to get some rolls to work in my too short hair.

❤ 4 ever,

betty
