dear mae,

i love love love halloween! i mean, really other than tom, who doesn’t? i know it’s about 30 days early, but florence is already in costume.  she’s made a darling femme doctor, tom baker style, complete with scarf, curls, hat and a time-lady twist.

i think if i end up going out this year, i might strip her down and steal her costume, after all, she is wearing all my clothes. (the scarf belongs to my brother, but i’m sure he doesn’t mind us playing dress up in it!)  what are you doing for halloween?

❤ betty

p.s. i’m really looking for a red mini dress, because tom said he wanted to go as star trek red shirts, but that dress is very hard to find. as is red double knit polyester and a pattern to stitch one up myself.

dear mae,

you and i both know how nerdy i can be, and a few weeks ago as tom and i were wondering around portland we saw this flyer.  doctor who is nearly the dorkiest thing that i love (besides maybe star trek, or nature documentaries) and it seems that no one out here, or at least that i know of, has heard of it, let alone is in love with the doctor the way i am.

i got all excited and dorky, and nearly called the number posted at the bottom to tell the poster, of the poster… something, i couldn’t come up with anything good, so i didn’t.  the flyer was hung conviently near this restaurnt:

and then, somewhat related, but not really at all, i took a photo of this phone booth.  because, i suppose just because i like phone booths, pictures of them, robots, and destruction.  all slightly doctor who related, but again, not really.

anywho (ahem), i was thinking of halloween costumes (so soon?) and i thought it might be fun to dress up like the doctor, (3rd, 4th, maybe number 5, or 10th, perhaps) with a sexy, girly spin.  any ideas? i’m not opposed to wearing a bow tie, or an ascot, or a puffy shirt.

p.s. i noticed after reading this how my language and punctuation changes when i talk about nerdy things like dr. who or knitting. it’s a bit of pure betty.

dear mae,

the time machine is starting to make progress! i have one little nook in my living room that is completely vintage.  for anyone reading who isn’t aware of project: time travel, the rules are as follows: i will only purchase anything for my home that is older than myself, or handmade, or of vintage design.  for example,  my eames style lounge chair was produced in the 80’s but was designed in1956, so i let it slide. plus it’s my favorite thing in the house.  the way i look at it, only the highest quality design and construction will still be hanging around from bygone eras, and are usually a steal at thrift stores or a garage sale, and worth a splurge at an antique shop.

clockwise from bottom left: 1970’s dinette chair, re-covered in 1960’s merimekko, free ; 1970’s olive teardrop lamp $12; florence, 1960’s italian mannequin$25; and of course, late 1980’s plycraft lounge chair and ottoman$15

this little nook is perfect for working on my knitting, listening to the radio with a cup of coffee, or curling up with a book.  the only thing thats missing is some bright curtains to hide the row of garages outside.  i think i might borrow florence’s outfit for today, she looks so cute!

hey mae,

and so, here it is, my completed dalek sweater. only it’s a pillow and not a sweater, because who needs all of that fuss?  i needed the gratification of a project finished,  and a pillow too, i suppose!  it’s so much fun, i think i might just make a few more completely nerdy pillows.

i found a whole bunch of awesome dr.who themed crafts at crafty tardis on live journal. did you know people still use livejournal? i haven’t seen mine since high school….

i ❤ you more!!

and dearest mae,  if you fail two more times, stop wasting your time, it isn’t meant to be. i acquired a huge skein of pink yarn and thought it perfect for my first knitted sweater.  i did attempt one in the past, but i didn’t know what i was getting myself into and ended up with a too-short, too-frumpy one-sleeve-too-long disaster.   this time was going to be different.  i found the perfect pattern, and even figured out how to add my own motif, knitted a swatch, and i’m much better at reading patterns by now.  but evidently not that much better.  attempt number one left me about a quarter of the way down before i realized that something was going wrong.  i reluctantly pulled the whole thing apart.  not a tear shed, and i started again.

it was going to be so cute too! pink boat neck with two dancing daleks on the chest, with a diamond lace pattern on the shoulders and back.

any-who, to make a long story short, i did the same thing on the second try.  i messed up the whole lace patten in the back resulting in a weird twisted mess.  i didn’t want to break my own heart a third time so i’m making something else, but i am committed to knitting something pink with a knitted red dalek on it.  so that’s not really giving up, right?

television time warp!

ever sense one of our local television stations started playing star trek the original series, i have been smitten.  i’ll admit, i had some preconceived notions about star trek, thinking that sense dorks like it, that maybe it was super dorky. but to my surprise, and utter joy, the show is amazing.  it’s an hour long romp though space every weekday night, battling romulins, curing alien diseases, and of course, kirk getting some space booty.

my new found interest in the sci-fi genre has also led me to the glorious dr who. i’ve only just started watching, but it seems as if the doctor always ends up in the wrong spot in time and space and has to solve some crazy alien’s problem with an adorable young lady at his side.  i have even started knitting a tom baker style scarf, and i’m aiming for fifteen feet in length.  i’ll let you know how that goes, it’s about four inches long right now.

i’ve always enjoyed vintage television shows, but i’m trying to spread my viewing away from such classics as i dream of jeanie and the brady bunch, and towards that of alfred hitchcok and the twilight zone.  let me tell you, netfilx for the wii is currently my favorite new technology, for bringing me back in time, or i guess forward in time, as the case could be, for a few hours on the weekends!
