Hey Betty!

I’ve never been one to hide my big, fat girl crush on Chanel. The Mademoiselle has been a subject of countless hours of conversation (to perhaps less interested, long-suffering friends and loved ones) and dog eared tomes of her life and work have a special corner of the bowing shelves of my bookcase. It seems fitting to wax poetic, as I just bought my first bottle of No. 5. Chanel herself picked every aspect of the scent, rejecting many prototypes to pick what is still today’s parfum: a deep, complex aroma, bold as it is timeless.

My Chanel Shrine: all of which were gifts save for the two large bottles of perfume.

Chanel eau, of course, seems like an insane luxury of Parisienne women, with their crisp suits perfectly pressed as they have their Pinot Noir in a classy café. True, it may be unnecessary in the grand scheme of things. But there are few things on earth that can make me feel so special, so beautiful, sensual, and distinctly woman. I got my first bottle as a gift from Jon’s mom; an incredibly beautiful, thoughtful gift from an indescribibly classy woman who knew how much I loved the Chanel story. She braved the ice covered streets of Paris to visit the Chanel flagship shop and brought me back a crystal tube of the lightest pink lipgloss and this little vial of warm, spicy glory.

The scent will always conjure up these memories. Every time I catch a whiff of the amber-colored zest, or see that medicinal, crystal vial, I think of the remarkable longevity of the scent on my clothes, the seat of my car, the couch where I knit, and the gift lovingly brought from the City of Light.

lots of amour,

mae

day 6 & day 7

dress, h&m; cigarette trousers, target; heels, hand-me-down from mom; cardi, old navy//tee, target; pants, thrifted; suspenders, thrifted

as you may notice, i took a day off. it should be day 8, but frankly, you wouldn’t have wanted to see yesterday’s outfit of black sweatpants and packers football jersey. sure, i love my packers, but it’s hardly what i’d consider fashionable!

hey betty!

even though it’s still the thick of the winter (and it will be the thick of the winter til at least april here) i’m already looking forward to cleaning out my closet, donating a bunch of stuff, and filling it back up with pretty, flouncy, floral dresses!

dresses from modcloth.com

i found a huge jackpot of dress inspiration at modcloth.com. the dresses make me want to be reborn in a time where gals wore pretty dresses with lots of lace detail. i can’t wait to hit the vintage shops around town, trying to find my spring dream wardrobe!

hey betty!

today’s outfit is a bit more casual, because i have a date at a funky little steakhouse saloon! it’s a very special date too: it’s the 8th anniversary of when i became jon’s main gal.

day 5

jacket, thrift shop from at least 10 years ago; tee shirt, target.com; jeans, from the thriftopia that is baltimore, md

don’t get me wrong, i love getting dressed up elaborately to go out, but it’s far more the style of jon and me to go to a hole in the wall in our jeans and unconventional jackets with our own thrift-store flare. i can chat and have a lovely time over a 5-course meal, but we have our best times with a couple of beers at some unique establishment.

lo-fi.

hey betty!

i know it’s rather “hipster” of me, but i’ve caught the toy camera bug. toy cameras are plastic (and frankly, cheap-o), vintage-style cameras that take photos on lower-speed film. the result is something kind of grainy, with leaks of light and just an all-around ethereal quality.

my toy camera is a hodar x-700, which i found at st. vincent de paul for $2.00. if you don’t feel like digging incessantly for months to find one (which is what i did; toy cameras go fast!) you can check out either the holga or diana models of cameras. they’re a bit more pricey, and use a bit more pricey film, but are worth it for the cool effects! check out light leaks magazine, or lomography.com for more info on getting the 70s lo-fi look!

hey betty!

i’m working days again, and have to find office-ready attire. so i’ve looked east to our french pals, and tried to gain some inspiration in the form of a french sailor type look.

day 4

striped tee, h&m; trousers, st. vincents; sweater, some korean shop (i can’t remember!)

as kind of a ‘state of the style month’ statement, i have to say: i’m loving putting together these outfits! it’s such a challenge to go outside of my usual go-to garments and make something original and fun.

bettilicious,

as you know, i work the solo graveyard shift in a cardiac office. it doesn’t really allot me the opportunity to dress biz caz (business casual) around my co-workers. so when they decided i needed more day time hours, i got to pull out this little number to look cute yet professional.

day 3

shrunken jacket, flea market; dress, urban outfitters; tights, primark.

it’s a little more basic, with double black; a shiny blue print lets my personality pop through a bit without looking like fran fine of “the nanny”!
