dear mae,

i’m getting down to the wire, and to be honest, it’s boring. this may or may not be the last time in my entire life that i can actually claim boredom.  i put together a nice “mom look” today to go run some errands and clean house (i hate the term nesting).  i put my hair up in a turban threw on some eyeliner and lipstick (as i was running out the door to catch the bus), i’m really stretching my maternity wardrobe now (literally, these pants are barley holding at the seams, i didn’t realize that this big belly came with a matching butt and thighs).

vintage scarf courtesy of a new dress a day giveaway!

holy crap stunned look on my face.  that is a huge belly.

and nothing better than a wack-a-doodle self portrait to make your own mom look more normal.

anyway, i’m down to the final stretch, only 23 days until my due date, so basically any day now! i can hardly believe it! i’ve made a few minor adjustments in the nursery i plan on sharing with you before the week is through assuming i don’t get caught up in the rest of my to do list, or something even more exciting!

❤ betty

p.s. have you seen my nursery on apartment therapy? i’m pretty proud!

dear mae,

last week when my mom was in town i got to play tourist in my own town.  i got to show her all of the things that i love about living in oregon, as well as discovering new things to love.  this includes the portland rose gardens.  there is no mystery to why portland is called the city of roses;  roses grow in the parks all over the city, in personal gardens, and near freeway off ramps.

the odor of the roses was so strong the moment we got to the gardens, you would have thought your nose was already pressed into the petals. the whole thing was absolutely astonishing.
oh! and the lovely 1950’s silk dress i’m wearing was a gift from my mom that we picked out from magpie in downtown portland. it’s perfectly lovely, but i spilled some coconut shaved ice down the front, so i already have to take it to the cleaners.  i guess i got the clumsiness from my mom as well!

p.s. i forgot to mention, the gardens are absolutely free to walk through, so if you are ever in the area be sure to check it out!!

dear mae,

you know it’s that time of year, the time of year when you tuck away all of those light, summery dressses into boxes and bins under beds, and in basements, to make room for all of the heavy knits and wools of fall…. or we can squeeze a few more wears out of our summer clothes with just a bit of creative accessorizing and layering:

  • try a long sleeve tee under a sundress for a jumper look
  • keep those gams toasty under some tights, leg warmers, leggings or tall socks
  • the shoes make the outfit! wear a sundress with some galoshes or boots
  • cardigans, jackets, and blazers can warm up any look
  • add a hat and a scarf, then go check out those blushing elms!
i’ve never been lucky enough to have a rotating wardrobe, with exception of a few heavy knits, but being thrifty has gotten me a lot more wear out of my clothes.
all you need is a little color coordination and make anything fit with the season.

dear mae,

i love fall! socks, loafers, cardigans, i could go on…. it’s getting chilly out here already, and at the first sign of cool weather i break out some knee socks.  so, maybe it’s not really chilly, but it’s definitly not hot out.  so maybe i’ll sport a summer dress, with some fall footwear.  i think it’s because i got a pumpkin spice latte the other day, (and every day since!) but i’m in the mood for some fall fashions!!

i found this dress on a table with a sign that said “pay what you’d like”  in front of bohemian vintage. at that time it was a full length mu-mu, with long sleeves.  just a few snips and a bit of a nip, it’s a lot more fashionable!

in other news, i can’t seem to make my hair into a proper bouffant without it parting down the middle about an hour after teasing it like crazy.  i think i might need to go get some more hairspray.

❤ always,

betty

dear mae,

next time you feel like you need a super great craft project, or two, and short on cash, i can tell you that your local thrift store’s linen isle might need a good sifting though.  the bed sheet i bought in my last post has been transformed into both a lightweight summer frock, as well as a curtain for my bed room! at the local good will in town they have a plethora of fun bed sheets ranging from graphic star wars prints to dainty florals and neat tickings.  the instant i saw this sweet floral/stripe/polka dot fabric i knew it would soon be a dress hanging in my closet! well, with no further ado…

i even used the trim from the top edge of the sheet for my skirt, sweet little polka dots!

i used a vintage dress that i already had for the pattern, i love the low scoop back.  i added my own little twist with the wrap around so there would be something just as pleasing for the front.
and then there were curtains! or kind of, they are only thumb-tacked to the wall until i get some proper rods.

well, how have you been spending your time when you aren’t busy working, or schooling or what have you? i also spent a good long time cleaning my bedroom. its funny how a little thing like tacking half a bed sheet to your wall can inspire you to get other things straitened out!

dearest mamers,

i know i was wearing this dress in my last post, but it is so damn cute i can barley peel it off my body.  it fits like a dream and has so many happy colors!! i can’t resist it hanging there in my closet, so it hasn’t spent much time in there.  i wasn’t feeling as cocky as the other day when i sported it with my pink turban headscarf and pearls, so this time i kind of toned it down with some grey and navy accessories.

we were at the portland museum of art to see ‘the allure of the automobile’ witch i have plenty of pictures of, but that’s another post.  there were a couple of paintings that really caught my eye, and i thought of sharing them with you first!

i heard a nearby couple giggling as i explained to tom about how this painting reminds me of my coffee from starbucks.  the green logo, the pink lipstick and the yellowish coffee dribble.

i almost expect to see my awkward reflection in the side of this car when i gawk at its photo-realism.

anywho, i hope it’s alright that i didn’t reference any of the artists’ names or the actual names of these paintings, because i didn’t read any of the little placards next to the pieces.

dear mae,

i’ve been told never to wear more that 3 colors at a time. i’ve heard, you always are to remove one accessory before you leave the house, i’ve heard that your shoes make your outfit, and that pearls are not for cleaning house in.  but screw it. i don’t need your silly rules, and i’m breaking all of them.

mod 1960’s dress from pop-up shoppe, pearls belonged to my mother-in-law, thrifted scarf

running errands always feels better in a new dress.
